i dug up the rose stick, planted a hydrangea in its place,
re-planted the rose (after feeling bad about just gonna toss it),
and planted a lackluster rosemary shrub that had been barely existing
in a pot on the front porch

you can kind of see all three of them
if you really look

our neighborhood is basically a riverbed from many many years ago,
and digging in the bed was torture, with grass sod, weeds, river rock...

i actually had to use a heavy pick-axe to break it up
because a shovel would continuously hit river rock

damn river rocks

it was a serious chore, taking several hours

but i got a bunch of it done
and stuff is in the ground now

i'm a tad late in preparing for autumn and winter
but i still have a little time before the dreary grey and
bleak rain is our everyday
and i just exist
for seven or eight months
and the light of spring makes me believe in life again

okay maybe it isn't quite that bad

but almost

really, almost

i tend to depress at this time of year
with the light dwindling
and the leaves turning

and wonder if this has been my last summer

one never knows
